The Eilandspolder is a centuries-old swampy old peat area. From the dikes you can see the Dutch landscape from the time before the reclamations.
Beemsterpolder
A little later you look out from the dike over the Eilandspolder on the left. A bird-rich area with many small canals, swamp forests and some wide watercourses. On the right you look out over the Beemster, the polder that was drained by hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater and is on the World Heritage List.
Golden Age
The route also takes you through some beautiful villages, such as Grootschermer, Noordeinde and Graft, which was still a port in the Golden Age. Here you will see some beautiful monuments, such as centuries-old town halls. You will also pass the Willem Woestenburg & Lou Beumer Monument. In early 1945, these resistance fighters tried to rescue the surviving airmen from a crashed English plane. They were caught by the Germans and killed during a shootout.
