Description
From De Rijp you can take a beautiful walk along the bird-rich Eilandspolder. You also walk through picturesque towns such as Graft and Noordeinde.
Beemster reclaimed land
A little later you walk onto the dike. On the left is the swampy Eilandspolder with its grasslands and canals. This is how large parts of Holland were before the reclamations started! What is striking: the Eilandspolder is located higher than the adjacent Beemster reclaimed land, which is included in the World Heritage List.
Golden Age
You also walk through some beautiful villages, such as Noordeinde and Graft. You will see some monumental buildings, such as a town hall dating from 1613 with three stepped gables. Just like Graft, De Rijp was an important port during the seventeenth century. First herring fishing brought prosperity, later they made a lot of money from whaling. A century later, this income disappeared: due to the economic standstill, the old village view of De Rijp has been well preserved.
NB; Due to the breeding season, you cannot walk this walking route between 15-3-2019 and 15-6-2019.
