Description
From De Rijp you can take a beautiful walk along the bird-rich Eilandspolder. You also walk through picturesque towns such as Graft and Noordeinde.
Dried factory Beemster
A little later you walk up the dike. To the left is the swampy Eilandspolder with its grasslands and canals. This is how large parts of Holland were before the impoldering started! What is striking: the Eilandspolder is higher than the adjacent Beemster polder, which is included in the World Heritage List.
Golden Age
You also walk through some beautiful villages, such as Noordeinde and Graft. You will see some monumental buildings, such as a town hall dating from 1613 with three stepped gables. Like Graft, De Rijp was an important port during the seventeenth century. First the herring brought prosperity, later they brought in a lot of money with whaling. A century later, this income disappeared: due to the economic standstill, however, the old village view of De Rijp has been well preserved.
