In West Friesland you can get a breath of fresh air on the dikes. In the polders you will find peace and historical places such as Medemblik. Ideal for a day of cycling!
The route starts near the beautiful fifteenth-century Nicholas Church in Hauwert. It is wonderful to make kilometers in the wide polders. You regularly pass a characteristic farmhouse. You will also pass the former Twisk Station. This station dates from 1887 and is located on the Hoorn-Medemblik railway line, which was also opened that year. Until 1936, the operation was in the hands of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, the first railway company in the Netherlands. Today a tourist steam train runs on this track.
Medemblik received city rights from Count Floris V as early as 1289. The town grew into a prosperous port city. You can still see this rich history in the many beautiful facades. Then you drive for miles along the West Frisian Omringdijk. From the saddle you have a beautiful view over the rippling water of the IJsselmeer. Just past Andijk you make a stopover at Angel Creations, a bicycle café where you can book various arrangements and creative workshops.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
