Description
Sneekermeer is now called Snitsermar. All waterways have been given Frisian names. Mar is a lake, located between the city of Sneek (Snits in Frisian) and the villages of Terherne and Goingarijp. The lake was created in the Middle Ages as a result of peat extraction. It is best known for its great popularity among water sports enthusiasts (think of Skûtsjesilen and the Sneekweek), but it is also always enjoyable from the shore!!
The route is varied and attractive due to the many farmlands and villages. There are several pavilions and restaurants along the way where you can stop for a snack. The city of Sneek, known for its water sports, is also definitely worth a visit.
An idea to get away from it: The Chameleon village of Terherne, where stories of Hielke and Sietse revive. The village and the forge have been recreated in a farm. It is also possible to take a boat tour. In Joure you can visit Museum Joure and in Sneek the Frisian Maritime Museum.
