The Marne is a beautiful region in the northwest of Groningen. You will find peace, space and plenty of natural beauty here, such as in National Park Lauwersmeer.
National Park
From De Theefabriek you drive to Zoutkamp, a former fishing and fortified town that once lay on the Lauwerszee. You drive along the Reitdiep to National Park Lauwersmeer. Get off at the Vogeluitkijkhut Jaap Deensgat to spot spoonbills. Further on you will pass the Landmark Sea Eagle Lauwersoog: an information board with a life-size cut-out of a sea eagle. You drive out of Lauwersmeer National Park via the Marnebos and the Vierhuizerbos.
Picturesque Leens
After you have cycled along the Wadden Sea for a while, you will drive through the polders on low-traffic roads. You won't have any trouble switching back here. You pass several centuries-old farms. The church in Hornhuizen has a striking yellow bell tower. Leens is a picturesque wierde village. You will see some monumental rentier houses and the beautifully situated Petruskerk, the nave of which dates from 1100. Back at the Tea Factory, it's time for something delicious!
