The Marne is a beautiful region in the northwest of Groningen. Here you will find peace, space and plenty of natural beauty, such as in Lauwersmeer National Park.
National Park
From De Theefabriek you drive to Zoutkamp, a former fishing and fortified town that was once located on the Lauwerszee. You drive along the Reitdiep to Lauwersmeer National Park. Get off at the Jaap Deensgat Bird Watching Hut to spot spoonbills. Further on you will pass the Landmark Zeearend Lauwersoog: an information board with a full-size cut-out of a sea eagle. You leave Lauwersmeer National Park via the Marnebos and the Vierhuizerbos.
Picturesque Leens
After cycling for a while along the Wadden Sea, you drive through the polders on car-free roads. You will have no trouble switching back here. You pass some centuries-old farms. The church in Hornhuizen has a striking yellow bell tower. Leens is a picturesque mound village. You will see some monumental retirement homes and the beautifully situated Peter's Church, whose nave dates from 1100. Back at the Tea Factory it's time for something tasty!
