Cycling along the Waal to Nijmegen

This route takes you past city sights and through nature: a perfect combination. The route begins in Nijmegen and takes you along the Waal River and through the beautiful Gelderland countryside.

Pearl on the Waal
From Stationsstraat in Nijmegen, you cycle towards the picturesque village of Bemmel. From the dike along the Waal River, Nijmegen soon appears on the horizon. You cycle past Valkhof Park onto the famous Waalkade. As you cycle along Nieuwe Marktstraat, you pass muZIEum, a museum that informs visitors about life with a visual impairment. The museum bills itself as the experiential museum about seeing and not seeing.

By ferry
Along the Waal River, you'll cycle through a mosaic of orchards and flower-filled meadows. It's wonderful to cycle for miles along the river. Every now and then, you'll see a beautiful old regional farmhouse. A nice feature of this route is that you cross the Waal by ferry near Druten. In Andelst, you'll pass the village church, whose Romanesque nave dates back to the eleventh century. Passing the small villages along the Waal, you'll cycle eastward towards Nijmegen.
