Wijk bij Duurstede, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 576103
Provided by: Groots Genieten
With this route you get the best of both worlds. You cycle through the open polder landscape of the Kromme Rijn region with its castles and fruit orchards. You also pass through the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
Castles
From the polder you can see the church tower of Werkhoven appearing on the horizon. Just outside the village you pass Beverweerd Castle. This building originally dates from the thirteenth century, the current building dates from 1850. Furthermore, there is Sterkenburg Castle, an originally fortified tower that has been converted into a country house.
Utrechtse Heuvelrug
It's a bit of a climb to climb the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, but you get a lot in return: an extensive forest and heathland area where it is wonderfully quiet to cycle. Winding for miles on rolling paths between deciduous and coniferous trees, what a cycling experience! Just before you enter the vast polder land of the Kromme Rijn region again, you pass the stately Slot Zeist.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
