Zoomland Estate
In the Middle Ages there was a large swamp east of Bergen op Zoom. Peat was extracted here from the 13th century. After digging away this peat, an extensive puddle was left behind. That water surface could absorb enormous amounts of water; it could 'drink like the sea' and was therefore called Sea Drinker. What remains of this forms the core of Zoomland. Due to mining and drainage, not much was left at the end of the last century.

By diverting ditches and retaining water, Brabants Landschap has succeeded in filling the Zeezuiper again. The trees are now drowning. That looks mysterious and majestic at the same time. Since this adjustment, the osprey has been coming to visit. You can see this bird of prey during spring and autumn migration, in April and September. This is not the only reason why Zoomland is worth a visit. Here you can wander along several kilometers of old avenues. Brabants Landschap partly maintains these for cultural-historical reasons, and partly they let them fall into disrepair. The older trees get, the more interesting they become with their holes, crevices and rotting wood. Owls and woodpeckers breed in it, but it can also happen that you see a pine marten chasing a squirrel along the trunks.
