Description
Natuurpoort de Brandtoren is the starting point for this beautiful cycling tour through the green border region of the Brabantse Kempen. You cycle through the Peelse Heide, the Carthierheide and various villages that are part of the Land of the Eight Beatitudes.
Peelse Heide
This nature reserve mainly consists of Scots pine, some fens and heathland. Various boulders can be found in the area, once carried by the Maas.
Cartierheide
This varied heathland owes its name to the Baron de Cartier De Marchiennes, who bought the adjacent Duizels Hof in 1863. Round sundew, blueberries and bell gentian grow in the area, among other things. Reptiles such as the smooth snake and the viviparous lizard live here. The field fritillary butterfly can also be found there.
Land of the Beatitudes
The word Zaligheden is a corruption of'selligheden\\\', eight typical Kempen villages whose names end in'sel\\\': Eersel, Steensel, Duizel, Knegsel, Netersel, Hulsel, Reusel , and Wintelre (Wintersel). The name'Zaligheden\\\' was used cynically by Dutch soldiers in the past (around 1830) because of the great poverty that prevailed in the Kempen.
