Hanseatic town
You walk parallel to the IJssel to Hattem. In the pleasant center of this former fortified town you will see numerous ancient buildings, so a nice opportunity to soak up some traditional Dutch cultural history. This beautiful town flourished under the influence of the Hanseatic League, set up by North German merchants in the 14th and 15th centuries as protection against the whims of feudal rulers. In its heyday there were as many as 150 Hanseatic cities, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany.
Bakery Museum
In the beautiful old town you will also find the Dutch Bakery Museum, nice to walk in. You will learn all about the history of bread and pastries displayed and baking is regularly done, sometimes in the 200-year-old faggot oven. Then drink a cup of coffee with giant butter pretzel, sugar bun or currant puff.
