Description

You take a beautiful walk around Groote Keeten, an undiscovered gem on the coast of North Holland. The village was built on the remains of the inundated island't Oghe and diked around 1600, up to Huisduinen. These polders were an important basis for later reclamations, such as the Anna Paulownapolder and Wieringerwaard. In 1610 the village grew so large that a "skilled shack" was built, a kind of town hall. Hence the name Groote Keeten. Groote Keeten is beautiful: you will find the widest beach in the region here and beautiful dunes such as the Botgat. This former Defense shooting range is now a beautiful walking area with nice paths and a lookout tower. A rare dune bird, the wheatear, breeds here in abundance (in rabbit holes!).
