Alkmaar, North Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 570450
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This walk takes you along the Markerpolder and the Starnmeer: two old North Holland reclaimed lands. You take a wonderful trip along beautiful dikes. What a wonderfully peaceful area!
De Zaan
The route starts at the Alkmaardermeer. From here you walk along the banks of the Markervaart to Fort Marken-Binnen, a fortress that is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort was completed in 1905. Further on you look out over the origins of De Zaan, the historic waterway that separates West and East Knollendam.
Tranquil meadow landscape
From the dike along the Knollendammer Vaart you can see typical Dutch pictures of grazing cows against a background of high skies. Bring binoculars to spot the meadow birds. You walk a bit along the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. On the other side you can see the beautiful church tower of Oost-Graftdijk. What a wonderfully peaceful walk here!
