Cycling along the Weerribben and Rottige Meente

You can take a beautiful bike ride on the border of Friesland and Overijssel. You drive past the Rottige Meente and the Weerribben, two beautiful nature reserves where you can still experience old-fashioned tranquility.

Rotten Meente
Oldemarkt soon appears on the horizon. On the Market Square you pass the beautiful fifteenth-century Reformed Church. You take a tour around the Rottige Meente, a nature reserve that was created by peat extraction. Here you see a mosaic of water and land, reeds and flowering grasslands.

Characteristic sailing village
A little later you drive past another beautiful nature reserve: the Weerribben. In the middle of the nature reserve you pass through Kalenberg, a sailing village that was only accessible by boat until the late 1950s. Further on you will pass two tjaskers on the Hoogeweg. You will also see a dyer's house and several nineteenth-century farm workers' houses here. Small farmers once lived here who earned money in the winter by cutting reeds or digging peat.
