Walking through the peat area at the Noordeinderplas

Enjoy a nice walk through a vast and quiet peat area full of puddles, ditches, reed beds and all kinds of different types of birds. Does that sound like music to your ears? Then you really should follow this route north of the Nieuwkoopse Plassen. You not only walk through a beautiful nature reserve, but also through several small towns.

The Nieuwkoopse Plassen
The starting point of this route is the parking lot in the village of Noorden. From here you walk along the edge of the Noordeinderplas to Nieuwkoop. This lake is part of De Nieuwkoopse Plassen, a nature reserve of 1400 hectares. This area was created in the 16th century by painting. The lakes in this area are used for pleasure craft, but you can also go canoeing or swimming. The reed land in this area is the habitat and breeding area of birds such as the great and the little reed warbler and the mustache. From Nieuwkoop you walk further to Zevenhoven.

The Polder Museum
In the village of Noorden you can finish with a look at the Polder Museum. In this museum you can learn more about living and working in the polder and other aspects of the history of Nieuwkoop. Turf is the most important subject in this museum, because it plays an important role in the history of Nieuwkoop. You will also find changing exhibitions on various subjects.
