Description
This route takes you across the polders in the area of Willemstad, Steenbergen and Dinteloord. This area is strongly influenced by the tides of the Hollandsch Diep and the Oosterschelde. For example, the Sint Antoniegorzen nature reserve on the edge of Willemstad was created from a salt marsh.
The Old Mill
The starting point of this cycle route is just outside Steenbergen. From here you cycle through extensive polders to the village of Stampersgat. Then you cycle over the Dintel via a bridge to Oudemolen and Willemstad. Along the way you can admire the Old Mill in the hamlet of the same name. This flour mill was built here in 1845. At the beginning of the 1960s the mill was supposed to be restored, but that did not happen. It was not until 2002 that the mill was finally renovated. During this restoration, as many original parts as possible were used, but other parts were renewed with copies of the old parts.
The Hollandsch Diep
Willemstad is located on the Hollandsch Diep, a large river arm that is connected to the Rhine and the Maas. This route takes you a short distance along this river arm. The water has continued to expand over the centuries due to storm surges. Today, an area of 4,254 hectares of the Hollandsch Diep is a Natura 2000 area full of special flora and fauna.
