Description

This walking route leads you first along the Market in Beesel. You can see some beautiful monumental buildings here. You can also view a statue that pays tribute to the dragon stabbing: a Limburg tradition that is still honored here and is on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Further on you will pass Nieuwenbroeck Castle, which originally dates from 1560. In the countryside you walk past meadows and fields to Rijkel. You will pass a number of old farms and a fruit orchard. Further on you walk along the Rijkelse Bemden, a natural gravel lake with a very rich bird population. You can also see the Grauwe Beer, a windmill from 1614 that was shipped from Zaandam to Beesel in 1891. You walk back to Mert 5 along the banks of the Meuse.
