Description
You can take surprisingly beautiful bike rides along the water around Spijkenisse. This route takes you along the Oude Maas, the Bernisse and the tidal river Het Spui.
Bernisse
You drive over the dike along the Shipping and Food Canal. It is wonderful to travel for miles here with panoramic views over the polder. From the beautiful village of Geervliet you cross the Bernisse. This used to be a watercourse between the islands of Voorne and Putten.
Criticisms
Cycling along the banks of the Bernisse is nice and quiet. You cross the water and cycle to Biert, a former manor. You drive across the Westdijk to Hekelingen, one of the oldest villages on Putten. The Spui is a tidal river that was created by a storm surge in 1532. Cycling along the dike you can enjoy the peace and the wind at your back.
