Exploring the Stellingwerfs

You can enjoy cycling between the Drents-Friese Wold and the Weerribben. This area is called the Stellingwerfs, an odd one out. Although it is located in Friesland, Frisian was not spoken here!

Stellingwerfs
Here you cycle through the Stellingwerfs, a part of East Friesland where Stellingwerfs, a Low Saxon dialect, was spoken until the 1970s. The name Stellingwerf is already mentioned in the Middle Ages. Werf means a place where justice is administered. The area was governed by three administrators (\\\'stelling\\\'), who were elected annually.

Lindevallei
At the beginning and end of the route you cycle along the Linde, a beautiful natural river where kingfishers also live. Along your route you will also find many small farming villages and De Eese, an estate from 1241 with a beautiful country house and an old castle. Back in the beautiful old village of Noordwolde you can take a look at the National Weaving Museum, where you can see different ways of weaving baskets, for example.
