Dive into the flower bulb era around Lisse

This route takes you straight through the Bollestreek from Hillegom to Lisse and on to Noordwijkerhout. From spring onwards you can enjoy beautifully colored flowers that bloom in the bulb fields. You will also pass several historical sights that are worth seeing.

Keukenhof Castle
On the first part of the route you cycle from Hillegom to Lisse. You will pass the beautiful Keukenhof castle. The world-famous Keukenhof flower exhibition takes place on part of the estate where this castle is located. The foundation for this was laid in 1857 by the landscape architect Zocher. Nowadays, around ninety purveyors to the court ensure that the most beautiful flowers can be seen in the Keukenhof every year. The garden is open from the end of March to the end of May. Then you cycle into Lisse, where you can take a look at Museum De Zwarte Tulp. In this museum you will learn more about tulip cultivation and its history.

On to Noordwijkerhout
Then you cycle further to Voorhout. Along the way you will pass the Ruins of Teylingen, a ring castle from the 13th century. Then you continue to Noordwijkerhout. Around 1904, the dunes in Noordwijk were excavated to plant flower bulbs. That was the start of the 'flower bulb era' in this area.

The White Church in Noordwijkerhout
Right in the center of Noordwijkerhout you will find the Witte Kerk, a church that was built around the year 1300. The structure was originally built in Romanesque style and served for Roman Catholic worship services. In 1508 a Gothic choir was added and the tower was raised by one floor. In 1573 the church was destroyed by fire. In those years the church was assigned to the Reformed. Parts of the church were restored in 1620 and 1730.

Please note: Part of this route runs through the Keukenhof grounds. This park is only accessible from the end of March to mid-May for a fee. The rest of the year you cannot follow this part of the route. Take a look at the Keukenhof website for exact opening times and entrance fees.
