Description
On this bike tour you will explore the green and rolling landscape between the Leie and the Scheldt. This route takes you through Avelgem, Spiere-Helkijn and the south of Kortrijk and Zwevegem where old farms and fields predominate. On the banks of the Scheldt you can enjoy a beautiful view over the hills of the Flemish Ardennes and Picardy Wallonia.
Admire ships at the locks
The small village of Bossuit is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle to Spiere past the Old Spiere Swimming Pool and the Spiere Lock Complex. The Scheldt used to run in a large bend at the location of the lock complex. The river was straightened here in 1920 and a lock was built to make it easier for ships to sail here. Take a moment to look at the lock and admire the ships that pass by. Then you cycle further to Zwevegem. Along the way you can take a look at the Ter Claere Mill, the Sint-Pietersbrug and the Orveytbos.
The Avelgem Scheldemeersen
You then cycle through the Avelgemse Scheldemeersen nature reserve back to the starting point of the route. This area consists of flower-rich grasslands, reed fields and wooded edges on the edge of cut-off Scheldt bends.
The Bossuit Pump Building
At the end of the route you pass the Bossuit Pump Building. This building was built here in the 19th century to supply the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal with water. In the Netherlands this is called a pumping station. In 1970 the canal was widened and a new pump building was also built. The old pump building lost its function. Nowadays it is only the starting point of various cycling routes.
