City channel
You start in Stadskanaal. You will soon cross the canal of the same name on the other side of the city. It dates from 1856 and was of great importance in the development of the region. In the nineteenth century this was even one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands. Because you often had to wait for hours at the locks, cafes and shops were established in these places. This is how places like Stadskanaal came into being.
Forest Service
You cycle through Gasselte, where you see some old Saxon farms. Here you can enjoy a nice terrace at Restaurant de Wiemel. A little later you drive through Gieten-Borger Forestry, an almost 3,000 hectare nature reserve that consists of a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests, heathland and peat bogs. The deeper you cycle into the forest, the quieter it becomes.
