Fortress Bourtange
This region is known for its peaceful esvillage landscape with picturesque old villages: perfect for cyclists. But the real highlight of this route is Bourtange, a fortified village that still looks almost the same as it did in 1742. William of Orange had the fortress built to liberate Groningen from Spanish hands. Bourtange was then on the supply route through the marshes. Dismounting is a must before you continue cycling through beautiful Westerwolde!
