A beautiful historic walking route along the special city gates of Enkhuizen. On the way back you will also discover a few beautiful old villages.
Water gates
In Enkhuizen you will find sixteenth century water gates: a gate in the fortress wall that provides access to the city via the water. The Oude Gouwsboom is the first on your route. Then you walk into the beautiful old Enkhuizen with its canals, before you set course for the well-preserved rampart. Here you will find another water gate: the Boerenboom. Stadspoort de Koepoort, a little further on, is only slightly younger: it dates from 1649.
Stede Broek
Outside Enkhuizen you will find even more history when you walk through Bovenkarspel. Together with Grootebroek and Lutjebroek it forms the farming town of Stede Broek, which was already mentioned in the 7th century. Life in the city was not easy for the people: they received protection, but had their work outside the city. They therefore received special permission from the administrators to stay outside the city for 40 days in the summer and autumn. Good thing, too!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
