Markermeer
You will soon cycle along the Markermeer. It was once part of the wild Zuiderzee, but now the water has been tamed. You can get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the views over the water. Further on you drive through a typical open polder landscape with canals, ditches and high skies. You regularly see a small church rearing its head up on the horizon.
Warrior
Just outside Hoorn you pass De Krijgsman, a mill with a remarkable history. A mill was built here in 1602, but it was blown down in 1860. His replacement, De Krijgsman, which was completed in 1862, burned down in 1896 due to a lightning strike. The current mill is a peeling mill from 1751 that was rebuilt on this site and given the same name. It's been there for a while, let's hope the tide has turned for De Krijgsman!
