Cycling through the Flevopolder

It is a true feat: conquering an entire province on the turbulent waters of the Zuiderzee. Cycling across Flevoland you can hardly imagine how wild the sea was here.

Biddinghuizen
You cycle between the rows of trees in a wonderfully sheltered area to the south, parallel to the Veluwerandmeren. You drive to Biddinghuizen, which is named after a disappeared village of the same name that was near Harderwijk. It was probably swallowed up by the sea in the year 800. It remains a crazy idea: where the waves of the Zuiderzee once rose high and threatened the adjacent land, you now drive through a vast polder landscape.

Swifterbos
You cycle straight through the polder to Dronten. As the kilometers slide by under your wheels, you look out over vast grasslands and canals. The land reclaimed from the Zuiderzee is neatly laid out, with the occasional green canopy appearing on the horizon. The Reve-Abbertbos looms there, along which you drive back to your starting point.
