De Hoge Kempen National Park is more than nature. From the lovely old Zutendaal to a medieval moated castle: this route takes you past the most beautiful places!
Picturesque Zutendaal
You start in Zutendaal, where you can admire the old parsonage and some old farms. The Church of Our Lady is also beautiful: this beautiful marl church dates from the fourteenth century. Then you cycle along two different canals under the Hoge Kempen. You finally enter the National Park via Domein Pietersheim in Lanaken: this castle park contains an old moated castle from the twelfth century. Be sure to get off and take a look around here.
Hoge Kempen
Belgium only got its first National Park in 2006: De Hoge Kempen, an almost 6,000-hectare nature reserve on the rolling Kempen Plateau between Genk and Maasmechelen. You cycle through coniferous forests and heathlands, but you also see deciduous forests, streams and fens. A beautiful silent mosaic to enjoy for hours.
