National Park De Hoge Kempen is more than just nature. From the nice old Zutendaal to a medieval moated castle: this route takes you past the most beautiful spots!
Picturesque Zutendaal
You start in Zutendaal, where you can admire the old rectory and several old farms. The Church of Our Lady is also a picture: this beautiful marl church dates from the fourteenth century. Then you cycle along two different canals under the Hoge Kempen. You finally dive into the National Park via Domein Pietersheim in Lanaken: on this castle park there is still an old moated castle from the twelfth century. Be sure to get off to look around here.
High Kempen
Belgium only got its first National Park in 2006: De Hoge Kempen, a nature reserve of almost 6000 hectares on the rolling Kempens Plateau between Genk and Maasmechelen. You cycle through coniferous forests and heathlands, but you also see deciduous forests, streams and fens. A beautiful quiet mosaic to enjoy for hours.
