De Hoge Kempen National Park is more than just nature. From charming old Zutendaal to a medieval moated castle: this route takes you past the most beautiful spots! You start in Zutendaal, where you can admire the old rectory and several old farms. The Church of Our Lady is also a sight to behold: this beautiful marlstone church dates back to the fourteenth century. Then you cycle along two different canals beneath the Hoge Kempen. You finally enter the National Park via the Pietersheim Estate in Lanaken: in this castle park, you'll still find an old moated castle from the twelfth century. Be sure to stop for a look around. Belgium only gained its first National Park in 2006: De Hoge Kempen, a nearly 6,000-hectare nature reserve on the rolling Kempen Plateau between Genk and Maasmechelen. You'll cycle through coniferous forests and heathlands, but you'll also see deciduous forests, streams, and fens. A beautiful, tranquil mosaic to enjoy for hours.
