Cycling route: 556023
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This route offers you a day full of variety. You cycle through the vast North Holland polders, over winding dikes along waterways and through the dunes. What else do you want?
St. Adelbert's Abbey
In the polder you will soon see the Noordermolen that drained the Groot-Limmerpolder. It was probably built in 1589, after the Spanish destroyed the predecessor of this mill in 1573 during the Siege of Alkmaar. Further on, in Egmond-Binnen, you will pass the Sint-Adelbert Abbey, the oldest in the Netherlands. The original building from the tenth century was destroyed by the Sea Beggars in 1573 on the orders of William of Orange. It was not until 1935 that a new abbey was built.
Stolpkerk
A little later you drive into the vast North Holland dune area. It is wonderful to travel for miles here among the conifers and dunes. What silence you experience here! In Krommeniedijk you can admire the Reformed Church from 1755, a beautiful sight! The former Fort Marken-Binnen is located on the Markervaart, which was completed in 1905. In Zuidschermer you can admire the Zwarte Kerkje from 1665, one of the few remaining bell-shaped churches.
