Walking through the Land of Leeghwater

This walk takes you through the unique water-rich lowlands of the Land van Leeghwater. You walk a big round around the Eilandpolder. And you see beautiful ancient sights, such as the ancient Schermer Mills.

Golden Age
This area was drained by hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater (1575 -1650). A large part of the route (from Driehuizen) you look out over the Eilandpolder. In this marshy peat area, farmers sometimes have to get on their barge to get to the cows. From the dike you see a landscape of long plots, grassland and ditches lined with reeds. It seems as if the Golden Age is still alive here, the landscape is so beautiful.

In Grootschermer you walk past the magnificent Town Hall from 1639. The Reformed Church from 1768 is also worth a visit. Don't put your camera away right away, because Noordeinde also has some beautiful buildings. And in the former port of Graft you pass the picturesque Town Hall from 1613. In Zuidschermer you can admire the Black Church from 1665, one of the few remaining bell-shaped churches.
