Alkmaar, North Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 556021
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This walk takes you through the unique wetland lowland of the Land van Leeghwater. You walk a long round around the Eilandpolder. And you will see beautiful ancient sights, such as ancient Schermer Mills.
Golden Age
This area was drained by hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater (1575 -1650). You can look out over the Eilandpolder for a large part of the route (from Driehuizen). In this swampy peat area, farmers sometimes have to use their barges to get to the cows. From the dike you can see a landscape of long plots, grassland and reed-lined ditches. It seems as if the Golden Age is still alive here, the landscape is so beautiful.
Stolpkerk
In Grootschermer you walk past the beautiful Town Hall from 1639. The Reformed Church from 1768 is also worth a visit. Don't immediately put away your camera, because there are also some beautiful buildings in Noordeinde. And in the former harbor town of Graft you pass the picturesque Town Hall from 1613. In Zuidschermer you can admire the Zwarte Kerkje from 1665, one of the few remaining stolp churches.
