Along the Lek it is wonderful to make kilometers on meandering dikes. You will find rugged nature reserves, historical sights and a refreshing amount of peace.
Rough river nature
Soon you cross the Lek with a ferry to Vianen: nice old skool! On the Lekdijk you drive past bird-rich nature reserves such as the Everdingerwaard and the Goilberdingerwaard. Here you will see hay meadows, reed collars, swamp forest and hawthorn hedges. In short: a wonderfully varied rugged river nature.
Castle Schalkwijk
From Culemborg you cross the Lek again with a ferry. You pass Werk aan de Groeneweg, a fort built at the start of the First World War. Just below Schalkwijk you pass a former medieval castle that was demolished at the end of the eighteenth century. Now there is a walking park with a garden complex. Tull en't Waal is a remarkably charming village. You can see, among other things, the village church from 1778.
