Farmers cycling route around the Zuidlaardermeer 52 km

We'll take you through the beautiful Groningen and Drenthe countryside around Glimmen and Zuidlaardermeer lake. Cycle through rolling meadows, romantic stream valleys, and (ribbon) villages where time seems to have stood still. Along the way, you'll meet farmers, gardeners, and entrepreneurs who are passionately committed to sustainable, local, and delicious food.

From the harbor in Kropswolde, you cycle to the greenery of the Drentsche Aa. Soon, you'll come across two colorful spots in Kiel-Windeweer: De Pompoenenschuur (Pumpkin Barn), with hundreds of pumpkins and gourds in all shapes and colors, and De Scharrelderij (Scarlet Farm), where you can meet authentic Groningen blaarkoppen (bright-faced gourds).

Once you arrive in the Drentsche Aa National Park, you can visit the Anloo Herd. This herd of over 300 Scottish Highlanders grazes in the wild year-round. At the De Grazerij farm shop, you can buy the natural meat from these robust cattle, as well as other regional products.

A little further on, you'll find the traditional shop De Maolderij. Step back in time among the traditional Dutch sweets, organic meat, and delicious regional products. Your sweets are weighed on scales like those used in grocery stores. The Munkakkers Food Forest is also located on the edge of this nature reserve. To visit it, deviate slightly from the route towards Zeegse at junction 89.

In the Appelbergen nature reserve near Glimmen, you can visit two lovely shops: the Noordlaren Vegetable Nursery and De Buurderij Butcher Shop. Both are pure, organic, local, and dedicated to craftsmanship.

Cycle back to your starting point via Landwinkel De Mikkelhorst in Haren, bringing your day to a close with aromas, flavors, and rural tranquility. A perfect day trip for anyone who loves nature, authentic food, and a touch of rural romance.
