A visit to the Dutch Wood

Surprisingly beautiful nature can be found in and around Lelystad. This route takes you through the Hollandse Hout, a beautiful deciduous forest on the spot where the turbulent Zuiderzee flowed less than a century ago!

The first kilometers you drive through green areas of Lelystad. It is surprisingly quiet cycling here. A little later you drive along a piece of polder. In the distance you can already see the Hollandse Hout, one of the few deciduous forests in the Netherlands. You mainly see poplars here, although willows, alders and beeches also grow there. However old the trees sometimes seem, they were only planted in the 1970s after the reclamation of Flevoland.

Shipwreck
From the edge of the Hollandse Hout you look out over a part of the Oostvaardersplassen. Bring your binoculars to spot some birds. With a bit of luck, the white-tailed eagle will come and take a look at you. In Natuurpark Lelystad you can admire a reconstructed prehistoric settlement and a shipwreck from the nineteenth century.
