Meandering along the Linge: from Gorinchem to Marienwaerdt

A bike ride along the Linge is the ultimate spring experience, but it can get quite busy. And actually the route is also beautiful in other seasons - then you have this beautiful area more to yourself!

Special church towers
With its 108 kilometres in length, the Linge is one of the longest rivers that has its source in the Netherlands. Along the banks you will find many centuries-old villages. In Acquoy you will drive past a fifteenth-century church tower that is slightly out of plumb and in Beesd you will also see a special church tower: the unfinished sixteenth-century tower of the Sint Pieterskerk. The tower was used in the past as a refuge when the Linge overflowed its banks.

Mariënwaerdt Estate
The easternmost point of the route is the Mariënwaerdt estate. This private estate of over 900 hectares has no fewer than 40 national monuments, such as 14 farmsteads, haystacks and flood barns. You will be amazed! Near Heukelum you will see another beautiful historical building: Merckenburg Castle, which originally dates from the thirteenth century. The current building was built around 1700.
