Kraggenburg takes its name from Oud-Kraggenburg, a small mound in the middle of the flat polder area. Before the land reclamation, this was a peninsula in the Zuiderzee. On the mound stands a characteristic house with a small lighthouse: the former lighthouse keeper's house from 1877. It harks back to the time when Oud-Kraggenburg served as a safe haven for shipping on the Zwolse Diep, which at the time was still connected to the Zuiderzee.

As the Noordoostpolder was further drained, the harbor and the lighthouse lost their function. Around the same time, in the early 1940s, the first pioneers arrived in this new land. Farms sprang up in the fields, and after a few years, the first orchards appeared.

Over the years, the orchards, nurseries, and growers expanded. As a result, you can now cycle through beautiful fruit blossoms here every spring!

This route takes you from Kraggenburg and Oud-Kraggenburg into the polders, past the orchards of large fruit growers. Apples, pears, cherries, and plums, along with the white and pink flowers, make it a delight every spring.

But this is also a beautiful route to cycle in summer and autumn. In summer, you can already find the first fruit stalls, for example, with cherries and strawberries from a real strawberry vending machine. And in autumn, the apples and pears are harvested, and you can enjoy this fresh fruit to the fullest.

Please note: many orchards are working farms and cannot be visited; you can only admire them from the road. Fruitboerderij Vink is open to visitors.
