The popular musical Soldaat van Oranje is performed in the TheaterHangaar in Katwijk. And for good reason: the facts on which the story is based took place in the Katwijk area.
The route starts at the Tourist Transfer Point Katwijk Zuidduinen. You cycle through the beautiful Hollandse Duinen National Park towards Wassenaar. In the dune landscape, if you pay close attention, you can still find mementos of the war past. Several bunkers are hidden under the sand. The dunes are intersected halfway by the Atlantic Wall, part of the more than 5,000 kilometer long defense line built by the Germans.
Would you like to see the Atlantic Wall up close? Then get off at Het Panbos (halfway between junctions 43 and 93) and interrupt your cycling tour for a short walk.
A little further along the same road, you can make a short detour by turning right into 1st Mientlaan. You will then arrive at the Valkenburg Naval Air Station, where the TheaterHangaar is located in one of the old barracks. This impressive musical is definitely worth a visit! Cycle back to the Wassenaarseweg to continue your route.
The Tower Museum is located in Valkenburg, just after junction 89. Here you will find a continuous exhibition that focuses on the Second World War. The impact that the war had on village life in Valkenburg is particularly impressively depicted. Please note: the museum is only open on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (and by appointment).
Done with your viewing? The route takes you via the oldest still operating foot ferry connection to picturesque Rijnsburg. The ferry sails daily from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM (Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). From Rijnsburg you cycle back to Katwijk, where you finally end up on the boulevard.
Make a stop here at Seinpoststraat, just after you have passed the recognizable lighthouse.
\\\'Can you see it in your mind? You are standing on the beach and the wild surf is roaring towards you. You cannot see the horizon. Your final destination is certainly not visible: distant England! It is cold and dark and a German occupier patrol could arrive at any moment. And there in the sand lies your canoe. You hope he'll get you across safely, but there are no guarantees.\\\'
Eleven attempts have been made to cross to England from Katwijk beach. Only 4 were successful. To commemorate these England sailors (comparable to Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema), a monument will be erected on the Katwijk boulevard in the spring of 2017.
Finally, you cycle the last meters along the beautiful boulevard to the end of the route. Have a nice trip!
