Westerland, North Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 552973

Wieringen may not have been a Wadden Island since 1924, but you can still experience the island feeling there. Put on your hiking boots and come and discover it for yourself!
Old dike
You walk the first part of the route along the south side of the former island of Wieringen. The Wierdijk, a remnant of a dike that dates back to the sixteenth century, starts from the hamlet of De Hoelm. It is the only remaining wierdijk in Holland, so it is considered a cultural-historical monument. In Hippolytushoef you will pass the monumental Hippolytus Church. The base of the church tower dates back to the twelfth century.
Salty view
Just outside Hippolytushoef you walk on the dike along the Wadden Sea. It smells wonderfully salty here. In good weather you can see the Kop van Noord-Holland and Texel. A little later you make a small climb towards Westerland. You pass the Nicholas Church, whose tower dates back to the fifteenth century. The route ends at Camping Waddenzee, a wonderfully quiet overnight address.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
