Views from Wieringen

With this route through Wieringen you can enjoy views over the IJsselmeer and the North Holland polder. You will also pass through characteristic villages and the quiet Robbenoordbos.

Den Oever
You start the route on Wieringen, a former island in the Zuiderzee that was linked to North Holland in 1924. You drive through characteristic beautiful villages such as Westerland and Hippolytushoef. Den Oever is the place where the Afsluitdijk in North Holland comes ashore. You will find some old locks and casemates here. The former lighthouse from 1884 is also located here.

Wieringerwaard
Further on you drive through the Robbenoordbos. From the dike you will soon have a beautiful view over the IJsselmeer. You pass the Dijkgatbos on the right. In the vast polders you pass through Wieringerwaard, a village that was once located on the Zuiderzee. Here you will see the White Church from 1865. A little further on you will pass the Polder House, which was the first built in the village in 1612. The route ends at Camping Waddenzee.

Robbenoordbos
The Robbenoordbos was planted in the 1930s in an area that turned out to be unsuitable for agriculture. Few of these trees are left alive. At the end of the Second World War, the Germans blew up two dikes to flood the Wieringermeerpolder. They wanted to prevent Allied airborne landings in this area. The forest also flooded and largely died. In the 1950s, new trees were planted, such as oak, alder and beech. In recent years, the Robbenoordbos has slowly grown into the Dijkgatbos slightly further south, so that a unique new nature reserve has now been created.
