Bicycle route Staverden, Vierhouten and Elspeet

You begin this beautiful cycling day at the Staverden Estate. This estate has held city rights since the thirteenth century, making it the smallest town in the Netherlands. It won't be long before you reach the next estate: Leuvenum. The accompanying manor house dates from 1923. On the way to Vierhouten, you cycle through a mosaic of deciduous forest, meadows, and the Elspeetse Heide. Just past junction 18, you pass the Verscholen Dorp, a hiding place for people in hiding during the Second World War. In the middle of the forest lies Gortel, which enjoys protected village status due to its well-preserved old farmhouses. From junction 46, you ride through the Royal Forestry Het Loo, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the Netherlands. The route ends with a delicious meal on the award-winning terrace of Brasserie Staverden.
