Description
The route starts at Gemaal Oude Rijn, Deukerdijk 42, Pannerden. This pumping station (also known as Bach's Pumping Station) opened in 2016. It is a museum (the engine room of the old pumping station can be visited), an art exhibition and a restaurant with coffee and an excellent lunch menu. There is also a beautiful bed and breakfast. Anyone who stays there for several nights can take various cycling tours and strolls through the Rijnstrangen area from here.
The route leads (for a short distance without a direct connection between junctions) to lakes that were created in the 18th century when dike breaches occurred. An information board tells about the history and the drowned villages at the time. The nature is breathtakingly beautiful. Many birds, natural cows and horses enhance the view. The route continues across the Kandiadijk via the mammoth monument towards Pannerden.
There you turn towards the Kijfwaard and continue the route through the floodplains and along the Pannerdensch Canal and recreation area Het Bijland to Tolkamer. The Europakade offers a beautiful view of the Rhine, which is still busy with traffic. And all this can be viewed from one of the terraces with coffee and lunch options. A short walk through authentic Tolkamer is of course also possible.
Then it goes over the Rijndijk, past various (former) brick factories to Spijk. This is the place where the Rhine enters our country. A short trip to Germany follows, Elten was a Dutch area for a number of years after the Second World War. This can be seen from the different names on the central square. The Oude Posthuys for example... From Spijk you can drive straight into Elten, but if you have climber's legs then go over the Eltenerberg.
A beautiful (fairly new cycle path) leads from Elten along the Oude Rijn towards Herwen. You will arrive at Huis Aerdt - a tourist information point in a beautiful country house. Over the Deukerdijk, the route takes you via the idyllic farming village of Aerdt back to the starting point: Gemaal Oude Rijn.
This route is also suitable for a mobility scooter.
