A beautiful route through the green surroundings of the Achelse Kluis, a Trappist abbey on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1656, a border chapel was built nearby: Catholics from the Protestant Netherlands were allowed to hold their worship services here, just across the border. The small community of monks that remains today now relies on the sale of Achel's Trappist beer for its income. You can taste delicious beers in the cafe - take a few with you from the store, for home or for a picnic on the road! The abbey is located in a remote corner, as befits hermits. You will find extensive nature reserves all around. You only have to cross the road and you cycle straight into the Leenderbos, a large forest and heathland area. Here you will find many old agricultural lands that belonged to the monks. In the Leenderbos you can still see a number of old camps: old fields surrounded by oak walls. The Malpie nature reserve further away is much more humid and rolling. The sand ridges date from the Ice Age and form a series of small hills, with beautiful fens in the basins. Meandering along the cycle paths you always have a different view of it! The start and end point of this route is Hotel Hooghuys, where you can relax before and after your route. Routes 159138 and 159139 also start at this hotel.
