Description
On this loop, you will discover the Heldense forests, the never-completed section of the Noordervaart, and a number of villages. But above all, you will enjoy the peace and quiet here.
Heldense Bossen This nature reserve consists of a mosaic of various interconnected pine forests, but you will also find small-scale farmland, small fens, and small heathlands. You can fully enjoy the silence here. In Helden, you can stop for a bite to eat or a drink at Branie Helden.
Noordervaart Helden actually consists of six hamlets: besides Helden village, these are Beringe, Egchel, Panningen, Koningslust, and Grashoek. You will discover a large part of these villages on this route. Your journey also takes you along the Noordervaart, constructed in 1808 on the orders of Napoleon as part of the Scheldt-Maas-Rhine Canal. However, the canal is only navigable as far as Beringe: the annexation of Rotterdam suddenly rendered the canal redundant and work was halted.
