Follow in the footsteps of the Romans in Woerden! Discover the Roman exhibition in City Museum Woerden and walk along the northern border of the Roman Empire.
Roman Woerden
Soon you will pass Stadsmuseum Woerden. Here is an entire floor dedicated to the Roman roots of this city, which was founded around AD 41 as a castellum called Laurium. You will see, for example, a parade helmet, bronze oil lamp and a sword, but also a unique asparagus knife. Worth popping in!
Castle Woerden
Around the Markt you will see several beautiful buildings, such as the beautiful fourteenth-century Petruskerk. From the Prins Hendrikkade you have a view of a former part of the fortress: the Defense Island. A little further on you will pass the beautiful fifteenth-century Woerden Castle. You then walk into the Brediuspark, a former estate. The Old Rhine leads you back into the city: this river was once the northernmost border of the Roman Empire. It is now difficult to imagine that Romans once patrolled here in full regalia!
