Roman hooves
Just below Simpelveld you start. Your walk takes you through Nijswiller and Wahlwiller, both of which originated along an old Roman road from Maastricht to Aachen. The name of the villages still refers to this:'willer\\\' is derived from the Latin'villare\\\', which means belonging to a villa. Roman hooves lay here long ago! Nijswiller is named after Saint Dionysus (\\\'nijs\\\'). Wahlwiller to the'Walen\\\', an old name for Celts.
Wine village Wahlwiller
In Nijswiller you cross the Sinselbeek, where the residents used to do their laundry. Then you discover the small Wahlwiller. North of the village there are three vineyards on the slopes. If you like churches, then walk into the village to the Sint Cunibertus Church, one of the oldest hall churches in the Netherlands.
