Discover the charm of the Peel

Today you will discover De Peel: where a large peat bog once lay, you now find a varied landscape of arable land, grasslands, and quiet nature reserves. Just past Grashoek, you drive along the pine forest of the Marisberg, the highest point of De Peel. Further on, you follow the Helenavaart, a small canal that was used for peat transport until the twentieth century. In Helenaveen itself, you also experience the reclamation history of this area. The authentic village is one of the two peat colonies in the south of the Netherlands. The Mariapeel is a remnant of the once vast raised bog that covered the wide region.
