Description

The Line of Communication between Hulst and Sas van GenLinie was constructed by the Spanish in 1636 south of the Axelse Gat to protect the Hulst region against State troops. This beautiful route takes you past four square redoubts on the Fortdijk, an old line dike that is still easily recognizable. In 1645 the entire line fell into State hands. From Fort Sint-Nicolaas you can clearly see the northern ramparts with outer moat. At Fort Sint-Livinus, the northern wall (note the bend in the line dike) and the southern moat are visible. Fort Sint-Jacob - nowadays a freely accessible nature reserve - has a new drawbridge and the courtyard has also been redesigned. Fort Sint-Joseph has also been transformed into a nature reserve.
