The Line of Communication between Hulst and Sas van GenLinie was built in 1636 by the Spaniards south of the Axelse Gat to protect the Hulst region against State troops. This beautiful route takes you past four square redoubts on the Fortdijk, an old line dike that is still clearly recognizable. In 1645 the entire line came into State hands. From Fort Sint-Nicolaas you can clearly see the northern walls with an outer moat. At Fort Sint-Livinus, the northern rampart (note the kink in the line dyke) and the southern moat are visible. Fort Sint-Jacob - nowadays a freely accessible nature reserve - has a new drawbridge and the inner courtyard has also been redesigned. Fort Sint-Joseph has also been transformed into a nature reserve.
