Dwingelderveld National Park is a fantastic cycling area. With this route you drive straight across the heath. And you experience nature in all its purity.
Dwingelderveld
You will soon cycle through Dwingelderveld National Park, a unique nature reserve of mixed forests, sand drifts and wet heathland. Looking out over the large heathland you experience a silence that is so rare in the Netherlands. You might even see a flock of Drenthe heath sheep.
Pleasant villages
In addition to natural beauty, Drenthe also has old thatched Saxon farms and characteristic villages where time sometimes seems to have stood still, such as Ruinen. On the village green you can see the twelfth-century Mariakerk. Before 1940, Ruinen Forestry was still a wasteland of swampy peat, wild heathland and sand drifts. In 1940, conifers were planted here for the Limburg coal mines. You are now cycling through a quiet and fragrant forest. What a change!
