Description

A wonderful day of cycling through a wide landscape awaits you in the West Frisian polders. The route also takes you through old hamlets and picturesque ribbon villages.

Polder mill
It is wonderful to make miles in the West Frisian polders. You drive through a wide landscape of vast grasslands, meandering dikes and many canals and ditches. You have beautiful views here, also thanks to the characteristic high Dutch skies. While cycling you pass numerous sights, such as old farmhouses. Just outside Groenveld you pass the Groenvelder: a beautiful thatched polder mill from 1572,

Old Town Halls
You will pass through Tolke, a hamlet that originated at the intersection of two waterways where the city council of Schagen levied tolls as early as the sixteenth century. Further on is Dirkshorn where you pass two beautiful monuments in quick succession: the Town Hall from 1870 and the village church from 1868. The Town Hall (1744) and the fifteenth-century village church in Oudkarspel are also worth getting off.
