Through the polders near Heerhugowaard

The polders around Heerhugowaard are wonderfully peaceful for cycling. From winding dikes, you'll look out over waterways and expansive meadows. The route also features several historic villages and landmarks, such as the Broeker Veiling.

In Oude Niedorp, you'll pass the De Hoop windmill and one of the three remaining church ruins in the Netherlands. Most of the church burned down in 1977. In Broek op Langedijk, you'll cycle past the monumental wooden auction building from 1912. This is where the first auction in the Netherlands for horticultural products was held.

Mills and a museum
From Heerhugowaard, head towards Oude Niedorp. Just past Heerhugowaard, cycle along the dike alongside the Schermervaart canal. In the distance, you'll see three beautiful windmills appear on the horizon. Two date back to 1631. Along the way, you'll pass the Grandmother's Time and Motor Museum. Here you can see engines from various vehicles and find all sorts of charming artifacts from grandmother's time. Just a stone's throw from this museum, you can also visit the Dutch Kremlin in Winkel.
