In the Alblasserwaard it is wonderful to cycle over the winding dikes. You enjoy the peace, wide views, picturesque villages and of course beautiful old mills.
Stork village
From the picturesque fortified town of Nieuwpoort you drive towards Groot-Ammers, a village known for its many storks. In the countryside you will also drive past the Regional Centre Stork Village Het Liesvelt. Just past Groot-Ammers you drive along the Molenkade past four polder mills. The quartet forms a beautiful Dutch picture. The Gelkenes Molen and the Achterlandse Molen are the oldest, they date from 1596.
Old Ameide
Further on you will pass through Noordeloos where you can still experience the atmosphere of times gone by in the village centre. Switch back in Ameide to enjoy the historical buildings. This beautiful town on the Lek is one of the oldest cities in Holland.
Fortified town of Nieuwpoort
Nieuwpoort is a fortified town that is part of the Old Dutch Waterline. Given its strategic location on the Lek, this town has often been fought over, although the famous Battle of Nieuwpoort did not take place here, but in the Belgian town of the same name. The two Nieuwpoorts are also twin towns. The fortified town enjoys protected village views, you can see many national monuments there.
