Spotting windmills in the Alblasserwaard

In the Alblasserwaard it is wonderful to cycle on the winding dikes. Here you can enjoy the peace, panoramic views, picturesque villages and of course beautiful old mills.

Stork village
From the picturesque fortified town of Nieuwpoort you drive towards Groot-Ammers, a village known for its many storks. In the countryside you drive past the Regional Center Ooievaarsdorp Het Liesvelt. Just past Groot-Ammers you drive along the Molenkade past four polder mills. The quartet forms a beautiful Dutch picture. The Gelkenes Molen and the Achterlandse Molen are the oldest, dating from 1596.

Old Ameide
Further on you pass through Noordeloos, where you can still experience the atmosphere of times gone by in the village center. Switch back in Ameide to enjoy the historic buildings. This beautiful town on the Lek is one of the oldest cities in Holland.

Fortified city of Nieuwpoort
Nieuwpoort is a fortified town that is part of the Old Dutch Waterline. Given its strategic location on the Lek, this town has often been fought over, although the famous Battle of Nieuwpoort did not take place here, but in the Belgian town of the same name. The two Nieuwpoort are also partner cities. The fortified town enjoys a protected village view, you can see many national monuments there.
