Experience the silence in the Twente-German border area

From Vroomshoop you can take a wonderfully varied route through the Twente-German border area. You drive through picturesque villages, the former Twente peat area and through the famous Twente bocage landscape.

Twente textile industry
The first part of the route takes you through the vast landscape around Geerdijk, Beerzerveld and Bergentheim. The raised peat was mined here from the mid-nineteenth century, because the Twente textile industry needed peat as a cheap fuel. You also drive through former peatlands in Germany. It is wonderfully quiet cycling here. Every now and then you drive through a small forest area, so that you can cool off on hot days.

Twente pace
How different is the landscape when you cross the border again at the Mander Circles. Here you cycle through the famous Twente scenic landscape of rolling fields, groves and fields lined with hedgerows. The slower you drive, the longer you enjoy the invigorating tranquility of Twente. Just before Geesteren you will pass the Grote Geesterse Molen, a flour mill from 1867. At the Oosteinde in Vriezenveen you will see some beautiful monumental farms. The route ends at Brasserie Restaurant"De Aanleg\\\".

Jannink's Bra
Just past Getelo, you pass the largest landscape art project in the Netherlands at the border with Germany: the Mander Circles. Dismount if you want to look at these two special fields. They were constructed in the 1930s by textile manufacturer Jannink and are therefore also called the Circles of Jannink. According to Jannink, farmers could work a round plot better because they did not have to turn their machine. Instead of crops you will now find a unique art project. A two-kilometre-long hiking trail takes you over the circles that form a beacon from the air. And pilots jokingly call it the'Jannink Bra\\\'.
